What is the

Meaning of Life?

If we are honest, there isn’t person, culture, era or philosophy that hasn’t asked this question. It’s a fundamental part of the human psyche as we search for meaning.

It’s a question that burdens us, wakes us up at night, presses in on us when we look at 200 billion trillon stars in our universe. It levels us, humbles us makes us realize we so infinitesimally small in an immense cosmos.

But why do we even ask this question if we are just a blind mass of cells, flawed, self-focused, broken beings, trying to fill our lives with stuff trying to stop this nagging ache of ‘meaning’.  Or is the answer, that we ask this question because, as the bible (the God Story) says:

"GOD HAS SET ETERNITY IN THE HUMAN HEART"

That there is more to life than this.

If science asks the “How question” Christianity (The God Story) answers the primary “Why question” and explains origins, purpose, meaning and destiny.

     1. Origins: Humans Made in God’s image.

The God Story, or Bible, starts with a book called Genesis which means ‘origin or beginning’. It talks about God, a spirit-based being, (creator, omniscient and immutable), outside of space and time, light, the cosmos and the earth.

SCIENCE CONFIRMS THIS WITH A "BIB BANG". BUT CANNOT ANSWER THE QUESTION OF ORIGIN.

That matter cannot be manufactured from a state of nothing, which was prior to the ‘bang’. Then God created humanity in his image (male and female), the highest life form; a physical and spiritual being that could commune in person with God. God lovingly gave them everything, stewardship of the earth, family, eternal life and choice, and they choose to rebel (sin) against God; the consequence of which was separation from God chaos, disunity and death. We call this the Fall of humanity

      2. Purpose : To know God - God doesn’t give up on humanity

Humanity became absorbed in its sin, autonomy and rebellion. We made ourselves our own gods, created our own stories and reaped the consequence. But God didn’t give up on us. All the way through history, and the rise and fall of empires, (Mesopotamian, Egyptian, Hittite, Assyrian, Medes, Persian, Greek, Roman), he spoke through His Story (the Bible) and His people, (the Israelites), that

A SAVIOUR WOULD BE SENT TO RESCUE HUMANITY FROM SIN AND DEATH

God, out of his love, sent his Son Jesus as the ‘incarnation’ or God in-the-flesh so that humanity could see God, talk to God, touch God and see his nature. Jesus is the biggest character in History, his miracles, teaching, impact and ressurection are still talked about today. For which we have historical evidence. Jesus came with a single mission to save us. He allowed the Romans and Jewish authorities to crucify him and in doing so he took the sin of humanity upon himself and paid the price for our rebellion, only God could do that. That is love, our purpose is to know God

     3. Meaning: Made to be in relationship with God

Jesus died and was buried, but three days later was resurrected by God. This was witnessed by eye witnesses, who wrote parts of the bible called the Gospels, and died for their faith. Paul the apostle, pointed to the many hundreds of eyewitnesses, who were still alive, (1 Corinthians 15:6) as proof that Jesus really did rise from the dead.  Jesus’ redemptive offer is this, that if we confess him as Lord(God), turn from our sin (repent), believe that God raised him from the dead we are saved and our sin is forgiven (Romans 10:9, Mathew 3:2). Our relationship with God then starts and we become new-creations, in God’s family (2 Corinthians 5:17)

     4. Destiny:  Restored to live with God eternally

At the end of the Bible God promises that there will be a new heaven and earth and no more death, pain or crying, that God will live eternally with his new restored humanity, that is all those that believe in and follow him (Revelation 21:1-4).

THAT'S A BRIGHT FUTURE AND IT CAN START RIGHT NOW

God’s story, the bible, is about the faithfulness of God to a rebellious people and His offer of eternal life to all humanity through Jesus.

John 10:10 "I came that they may have life and have it abundantly"
